We are living in strange times for sure.
Normally, right about now there’s a large percentage of people who are trying to get “beach ready” while also balancing the constant flow of BBQs, summer vacations, and social events.
2020 had other ideas.
Maybe this has presented an opportunity to truly consider what’s meaningful and what you value.
I’ve seen a lot of so-called experts out there talking about “health.”
Makes sense, right?
In the midst of a pandemic, it’s easy to see that we’ve taken our health for granted in certain contexts and maybe this is the wake up call.
However, this also got me thinking about how we’ve lost touch of what “health” truly means.
How the diet industry looks at health
Because I’ve seen those same so-called experts promoting restrictive diets and pushing the narrative that eating less is always the answer.
There’s no doubt that nutrition is one of the single most powerful tools to assist in good health.
Like any tool, it can also be used to do harm.
Eating mostly nutrient-dense foods, eating for your own individual needs, eating based on your own biofeedback, and eating the right amounts for you … all will contribute to better health.
It’s ironic that in the fitness industry … we rarely see this come to fruition.
Typically, it’s eating too little. Obsessing about weighing and tracking every little gram of food. Eating based on a formula or algorithm. Ignoring biofeedback. And, trying to come up with a one-size-fits-all solution.
That doesn’t scream HEALTH to me.
Feeling a lack of control around certain foods is likely because you’ve been led to believe those foods are bad or off limits.
Having anxiety around social events or dining out is likely because you’ve been led to believe that tracking every single meal is the key to success.
Consistently eating too little is likely because you’ve been led to believe that weight loss is the end all be all for good health and that a calorie deficit is necessary to get there.
Consistently eating too much is likely because you got fed up with diet culture bullshit and decided to say fuck it.
How does an industry that is supposed to support better health and be on the front line of disease prevention contribute to unhealthy eating habits and a poor relationship with food?
I would say I don’t understand but that’d be a lie.
It’s a strategic financial decision, unfortunately.
The more you have to rinse and repeat diet cycles, the more money you’ll dish out to keep trying to get “beach ready.”
Here’s what health really means
I’m sick of it. I’m sick of the psychological damage and the marketing disguised as “better health.”
You should feel comfortable and confident around all foods.
You should embrace the meaningful experiences, social events, etc. that contribute to your health in so many ways without stressing about food.
You should understand YOUR body and your own individual needs when it comes to nutrition. Your body doesn’t need a calculator to survive.
You should feel in tune with your satiety and hunger signals.
You should not feel a constant tug of war between having a life and being fit and healthy.
You should be able to laugh at the bullshit marketing and restrictive diets that try to place you in a box and promise you unsustainable results.
Better health = dietary freedom.
