A tale of two twins …
I know, “two twins” is redundant but it makes the alliteration better.
Anyway, this is a story about Angela and Allison.
They grew up in the same home, with the same parents, and the same upbringing.
From a very young age, both Angela and Allison witnessed diet-like behaviors in their household.
Points being counted by mom.
Conversations about not eating too much dessert because it’s important to look “normal.”
Comments from dad about their weight.
Mentions of what boys “find attractive.”
It all seemed pretty standard at the time and a bunch of their friends had similar experiences so they thought nothing of it.
As they got older, their behaviors around food began to manifest differently.
Living a life of dietary restriction …
First their was Angela …
Angela was always on a diet.
She would reward herself for not eating when hungry.
She was competitive and wanted to see how long she could hold off on eating despite serious hanger.
She would go out with friends and order a club soda with lime and a splash of cranberry juice to make it look like she was drinking.
She would tell her friends that she just ate before she got there or just wasn’t feeling all that well.
Angela always viewed food as something to be avoided.
Only small portion sizes.
Never get dessert.
Lapses in willpower must be followed up with extra cardio to burn off those calories.
Even with all of her efforts, discipline, and willpower … Angela still struggled.
Her body never looked the way she wanted it to.
She was never fulfilled.
Never satisfied.
Always felt like something was missing.
Her life felt like a constant roller coaster.
Living with a poor relationship with food …
Then, there was Allison.
Allison filled her voids with food.
Emotions, boredom, or pain … Allison would eat herself numb.
All of the talks of moderation or portion control only made it worse.
She felt like a constant train wreck.
She would question herself, her discipline, her willpower.
She would beat herself up and could hear her parents’ voice about “eating like a normal person.”
How can she say that she wants to look and feel a certain way and then continue to eat like that?
Allison would go out with friends and would hold it together.
All she could think about was food but she would only take a few bites of the appetizers and always ordered a salad.
Then, she would get home and eat everything in sight.
Her body never looked the way she wanted it to.
She was never fulfilled.
Never satisfied.
Always felt like something was missing.
Her life felt like a constant roller coaster.
There’s something else I forgot to tell you about Angela and Allison.
I lied about them.
They aren’t twins.
In fact, they are the same person.
Angela’s real name is All.
And Allison’s real name is Nothing.
And they are both you.
Have you been guilty of an ‘all or nothing’ mindset?
All is what you attempt because you think that’s what needs to be done.
The forever diet.
Constant restriction.
Food rules.
Zero balance.
Nothing is where you land when that inevitably fails.
Fuck-it mode.
Loss of control.
Rebel.
Zero balance.
The only way you’re ever going to reach your goals and stay there is to stop living on either end of the extremes.
You have to find the middle.
You have to ditch the diet mentality.
You have to stop viewing your path to success as a race to the bottom.
Ditch the ‘all or nothing’ mindset and say hello to dietary freedom.
The All is leading to the Nothing.
Remove the All …
And you’ll remove the Nothing.
